Neck/Thyroid Ultrasound and Biopsy (FNA)

NECK/THYROID ULTRASOUND AND BIOPSY (FNA)

At Morgan Cartoon we perform ultrasound of the neck for a variety of reasons, including investigation of a lump in the neck which may be felt by the patient or their doctor, enlarged lymph glands or salivary glands in the neck/face, abnormal thyroid function blood tests, family history of thyroid disease, difficulty swallowing, pain in the neck, dry mouth and voice changes.

The ultrasound scan takes approximately 10-15minutes and is performed by Dr Cartoon.

When an abnormality is found this may lead to us performing a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) to attempt to determine the exact nature of the lump. This in turn will guide management. Some lumps will need to be removed surgically by a specialist endocrine/ENT surgeon and others can be safely managed with ultrasound surveillance.

Dr Cartoon has performed more than 30,000 ultrasound guided procedures and more than 2000 ultrasound guided FNA’s of the thyroid gland without any serious complications.
